Tips on Pressing Flowers

12.05.2024

There’s something timeless about capturing nature’s beauty in delicate pressed flowers. Whether it’s for a gift card, a framed artwork, or even a keepsake inside one of our floral domes, pressed flowers add an elegant, handcrafted touch to any piece.

At Floradise Studio, we’re big fans of preserving floral moments — so we’ve put together a quick guide for those of you wanting to try your hand at flower pressing at home. Whether you're a total beginner or looking to refine your process, here are some handy tips to get you started.

The Art of Pressed Flowers Pressed flower art is a timeless and tranquil craft that involves preserving the natural beauty of flowers and arranging them into stunning designs. This delicate process not only captures the elegance of nature but also fosters mindfulness and creativity.

1. Pick the Right Flowers
Not all flowers press equally well. Look for flowers that aren’t too thick or juicy (think roses — lovely but tricky). Some of our favourites for pressing include:
Daisies Delphiniums Pansies Hydrangea petals Ferns and delicate greenery If you’re using thicker blooms, consider pressing individual petals instead of the whole flower head.

2. Harvest at the Right Time
For best results, pick your flowers when they’re fresh and dry. Morning, after the dew has evaporated, is ideal. Avoid flowers that are wilted, browning, or overly moist — they’ll discolour or go mouldy during pressing.

3. Blot Before Pressing
Before pressing, gently blot your flowers between two pieces of kitchen towel to remove any excess moisture. This helps prevent mould and ensures a cleaner press.

4. Use a Proper Pressing Method
You’ve got options here:

Traditional Book Method
Place your flower between parchment or blotting paper and press it inside a heavy book. Stack additional books on top for even pressure. Leave for 2–4 weeks.

Flower Press
These are wooden presses you can tighten with screws. They’re handy if you’re pressing flowers often and want more consistent results.

Iron or Microwave Methods (for the impatient!)
These are quick but risk losing colour. If you do go this route, use low heat and always sandwich your flowers in paper to protect them.

5. Mind the Arrangement
Before pressing, think about how the flowers will look flattened — petals may shift or overlap oddly. Gently arrange them with tweezers before placing them in the press.

6. Preserve the Colours
Pressed flowers can fade over time. Keep your artwork out of direct sunlight and consider using UV-protective glass when framing. Acid-free paper and backing will also help preserve their colours.

7. Get Creative with Display
Pressed flowers are perfect for:
Framed botanical art
Greeting cards
Bookmarks
Resin jewellery

Final Thoughts
There’s something incredibly satisfying about preserving blooms that carry a special memory — whether it's from a romantic bouquet, a walk in nature, or a moment of celebration. Pressing them lets you keep those stories alive in a beautiful, lasting way.
